INFUSEŽ Bone Graft/LT-CAGEŽ Device: Putting an End to Some Surgical Pain

INFUSEŽ Bone Graft is a formulation of rhBMP-2 (recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein - 2) plus a collagen sponge. The protein is similar to the natural protein found in the human body that causes bone formation. The protein was discovered in extracts of bone and isolated.

Bone is made up of about 65-70 percent mineral and 30-35 percent organic matrix (i.e., collagen). In 1965, Dr. Marshall Urist of Los Angeles, CA, discovered that by demineralizing bone and placing only the organic matrix part of the bone into the muscle of rats, he could promote new bone formation.

This discovery led to additional research, which proved that a series of proteins found in bone matrix, collectively known as BMPs, were responsible for the bone formation observed by Urist. This ability to promote bone growth at an ectopic (non-bony) site in an adult animal has become the definitive test to determine if a material induces bone growth (is classified as osteoinductive).

The importance of INFUSEŽ Bone Graft with the LT-CAGEŽ Device is that it eliminates the need for a surgeon to take a bone graft from the hip of the patient. This procedure often causes significant pain in the patient's hip. Some patients have shown signs of discomfort at the graft site up to two years after surgery. Clinical studies of INFUSEŽ Bone Graft with the LT-CAGEŽ Device have resulted in the elimination of complications and pain associated with graft harvesting in 100 percent of patients postoperatively. More importantly, patients who received INFUSEŽ Bone Graft instead of a graft from their hip (autograft), which is considered the "Gold Standard" of bone grafts, exhibited a fusion rate and level of relief from disabling low back pain at least equal to that found in the patients with the graft taken from their hip. So INFUSEŽ Bone Graft, in combination with the LT-CAGEŽ Device, has been proven to be equal in fusion rates with the "Gold Standard" of bone grafts, without the debilitating hip pain that results from the autograft surgery.
