What is INFUSE® Bone Graft and how does it compare to the natural protein in my body that helps bones to grow?

Dr. Kenneth A. Pettine
Loveland, CO

A prospective randomized series has indicated 94.5% of patients with the INFUSE® Bone Graft/LT-CAGE® Device and 88.8% of the patients with the bone graft group develop fusion at 24 months. Thirty-two percent of the patients who had a bone graft taken continue to experience graft site pain at 24 months follow up. The patients with the INFUSE® Bone Graft/LT-CAGE® Device versus autograft had a statistically shorter operative time of 1.6 hours verses two hours with statistically less blood loss and a shorter hospital stay.

Dr. Scott H. Kitchel
Eugene, OR

The INFUSE® Bone Graft/LT-CAGE® Device contains a human protein grown from a recombinant process that is one of the proteins that stimulate bone healing and fusion. It is exactly like one of the proteins in your body that stimulates this process. The material is used with the LT-CAGE® Lumbar Tapered Fusion Device.

The INFUSE® Bone Graft/LT-CAGE® Device contains a manufactured copy of a normal protein present in your body. The protein causes a high concentration of bone forming cells to accumulate wherever it is placed. The protein is placed on a collagen sponge.

Dr. J. Kenneth Burkus
Columbus, GA

The protein is 100% pure and it is the same protein that occurs in your body naturally. What the BMP does, it helps to encourage cells to become bone cells at the area of surgery.

Dr. Paul J. Slosar
Daly City, CA

The INFUSE® Bone Graft/LT-CAGE® Device contains a commercially available protein that has been purified to specifically generate bone in the immediate area that it is placed. The actual history is that 30 years ago scientists discovered that certain proteins were present in fracture/ bone healing. Scientists purified those proteins and found a number of bone morphogenetic proteins, meaning proteins that will change cells into bone producing cells. Once they identified a number of proteins, they identified the ones that worked best. Many researchers spent years and years purifying these to the point where they could reliably produce bones in humans. Then they used the current technology to take the protein and manufacture that in a commercial sense so that you have the product available today that we know as the INFUSE® Bone Graft/LT-CAGE® Device.

Dr. Scott Boden
Decatur, GA

The INFUSE® Bone Graft/LT-CAGE® Device contains the same type of proteins that your body uses to tell itself when it is time to make new bone. It attracts the special cells that make new bone to the surgical site and instructs them to make new bone. The bone is your own bone, made by your cells, and exactly the same as any other bone in your body.

Dr. Jorge E. Isaza
Baton Rouge, LA

The INFUSE® Bone Graft/LT-CAGE® Device contains a protein that is identical to one of the natural proteins in your body that promotes bone growth. It is one of the many proteins that bone produces in order to promote healing. In studies of the substance, it appears to be the most efficient stimulant for producing bone formation and growth around a fusion site inside of a cage.

Dr. Theodore A. Belanger
Charlotte, NC

The INFUSE® Bone Graft/LT-CAGE® Device contains an engineered protein that can be implanted in your spine to stimulate your body to make bone. It is an identical substance to that made by your body to promote bone growth naturally. The bone that is made in response to the INFUSE® Bone Graft/LT-CAGE® Device is identical to the other bone made by your body.

Dr. Robert S. Pashman
Los Angeles, CA

The product contains a synthetic protein very similar to proteins that bone naturally produces when healing or growing.

Dr. Kambiz Hannani
Los Angeles, CA

The INFUSE® Bone Graft/LT-CAGE® Device contains one type of BMP (bone morphogenetic protein) that helps the body create bone. The bone that is created is identical to the bone anywhere else in your body. The INFUSE® Bone Graft/LT-CAGE® Device helps surgeons to avoid having to take additional bone from you hip when doing spinal fusion surgery.

Dr. Jeffrey C. Wang
Los Angeles, CA

The product contains qualities similar to natural protein. It was discovered from extracts of bone and so that means someone took some of the components that are contained in your bone and they isolated the protein that stimulates bone formation.

Important Safety Information

The commentary above recounts the experiences of these physicians. Medtronic invited them to share their stories candidly. Keep in mind that results vary; not every patient's response is the same. Talk with your doctor to learn more about any products that are mentioned above.

It is important that you discuss the potential risks, complications and benefits of spinal surgery with your doctor prior to receiving treatment, and that you rely on your doctor's judgment. Only your doctor can determine whether you are a suitable candidate for this treatment.
