What is INFUSE® Bone Graft and how does it compare to the natural protein in my body that helps bones to grow?
A prospective randomized series has indicated 94.5% of patients with the INFUSE® Bone Graft/LT-CAGE® Device and 88.8% of the patients with the bone graft group develop fusion at 24 months. Thirty-two percent of the patients who had a bone graft taken continue to experience graft site pain at 24 months follow up. The patients with the INFUSE® Bone Graft/LT-CAGE® Device versus autograft had a statistically shorter operative time of 1.6 hours verses two hours with statistically less blood loss and a shorter hospital stay.

The INFUSE® Bone Graft/LT-CAGE® Device contains a commercially available protein that has been purified to specifically generate bone in the immediate area that it is placed. The actual history is that 30 years ago scientists discovered that certain proteins were present in fracture/ bone healing. Scientists purified those proteins and found a number of bone morphogenetic proteins, meaning proteins that will change cells into bone producing cells. Once they identified a number of proteins, they identified the ones that worked best. Many researchers spent years and years purifying these to the point where they could reliably produce bones in humans. Then they used the current technology to take the protein and manufacture that in a commercial sense so that you have the product available today that we know as the INFUSE® Bone Graft/LT-CAGE® Device.

The INFUSE® Bone Graft/LT-CAGE® Device contains the same type of proteins that your body uses to tell itself when it is time to make new bone. It attracts the special cells that make new bone to the surgical site and instructs them to make new bone. The bone is your own bone, made by your cells, and exactly the same as any other bone in your body.

The INFUSE® Bone Graft/LT-CAGE® Device contains a protein that is identical to one of the natural proteins in your body that promotes bone growth. It is one of the many proteins that bone produces in order to promote healing. In studies of the substance, it appears to be the most efficient stimulant for producing bone formation and growth around a fusion site inside of a cage.
